Our Commitment to Safety

The Visible College exists so that people can explore difficult questions safely. That safety is not only intellectual. We are currently working on a founding charter for the College, and a core value written into it is safety: a community where scholars can be vulnerable, and where inquiry into the unknown never comes at the cost of anyone’s safety or dignity.

To anyone in our community, or in the wider field, who has experienced intentional harm, especially sexualized violence: what happened to you was not acceptable, and the fault lies squarely with those who did it. At The Visible College we take every disclosure seriously, and our draft charter sets out how we respond when someone comes to us. We wish we didn’t need it. We hope to help build a world where we don’t. But the world we live in now means we do.

When someone discloses to us, we will listen, and we will respect their choices about what happens next, including whether, when, and to whom they report. If you choose to report to police or other authorities, we will help you find the right place to do so, wherever in the world you are. If you want support without reporting, we will help you find that too.

Anyone may raise a concern with us by writing to admin [at] thevisiblecollege [dot] org. Messages to that address are received by the College’s administrators and handled with care and privacy.
